Black Tourmaline History and Uses:

Tourmaline has been known since ancient times, a likeness of Alexander the Great carved in India in the 2nd or 3rd century BC has been found. It is the only gemstone which has such a wide variety of colours including red, pink, green, black, blue, violet, yellow and brown. This amazing crystal is pyroelectric and piezoelectric and Dutch traders would rub them and use them to pull the ashes from their meerschaum pipes, hence their name aschentrekkers or ash pullers.


Black Tourmaline Geological Description:

Black Tourmaline is a complex borosilicate with a hardness of 7 to 7.5. Its crystal pattern is hexagonal (trigonal) with prismatic crystals and striations running parallel to the main axis. The major areas that Tourmaline is found include Brazil, USA, Africa, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and Russia.

Feldspar History and Uses:

Feldspar was officially given its name by Johan Gottschalk Wallerius in 1747. It is a contraction of the longer name fieldspar as some early specimens were found in fields. The term spar is a generic term used to refer to any non-metallic mineral with a vitreous (glassy) lustre that breaks on distinct flat surfaces. 

Feldspar is an incredibly abundant mineral. It has been found on the moon and in some meteorites. It also makes up roughly 60% of the Earth’s crust. 


Feldspar Geological Description:

Feldspar is the name given to a group of tectosilicates with various minerals such as aluminium, sodium, potassium and calcium, and includes the crystals Amazonite, Labradorite, Moonstone, Orthoclase and Sunstone. This mineral group can be found as veins within igneous and metamorphic rocks and has a characteristic non metallic lustre, and a wide range of colours depending on the additional metals present within its formulation. Holds a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale.
Mainly found in Turkey, but also in Italy, China, and the United States.
