The oldest records of Peridot date back to 1500 BC where it was mined in Zabargad, an island in the Egyptian Red Sea. Peridot was considered a symbol of the Sun from Ancient Times to the Middle Ages and according to a Greek manuscript it confers royal dignity to its bearer. It was a favourite of the ancient Egyptians who used to crush it into a powder to treat asthma, relieve thirst and heat and to ward off evil spells. Peridot is also known as Olivine and Chrysolite. It varies in colour from yellow, to brownish to olive green depending on the amount of iron in the crystal. Gem quality Peridot is relatively rare so it is considered a precious stone. Peridot is one of only two gemstones formed deep in the magma of the earth, it is brought to the surface through volcanic activity. Olivine can sometimes be found in pallasite meteorites.
